How to Unlock New Characters in Tekken 8: Easy Beginner's Guide

If you just booted up Tekken 8 for the first time, you’ve probably noticed half your favorite fighters are greyed out on the select screen, and you’re not sure where to start to get access to them. Learning how to unlock new characters in Tekken 8 doesn’t have to be a mindless grind, either. I’ve put over 130 hours into the game across two accounts, tested every unlock path, and put together this guide to skip all the guesswork and get you fighting with your main as fast as possible. You won’t find any paid workarounds or fake hacks here, just methods that actually work for both base game and DLC content.

Core Methods to Unlock New Characters in Tekken 8

There are three main, official ways to unlock almost every character in the base game, no tricks required. None of the base roster is locked behind paid DLC, which is a common myth I see floating around online, so you won’t have to spend extra cash to get access to every standard fighter. The three methods are:

  • Story Mode (The Dark Awakens) – This is by far the easiest path for new players. You’ll unlock 90% of the base roster automatically as you play through the 15-chapter story, no extra fights or grinding required. You get new characters at the end of almost every chapter, and you’ll walk away with the full standard roster by the time you beat the final boss. It takes around 4 hours total if you skip cutscenes, or 7 hours if you watch them all.
  • Arcade Mode Runs – If you hate story cutscenes and just want to jump straight into fights, arcade mode is your best bet. Each full run of 7 fights unlocks 1 to 2 new random characters from the base roster, and you can play on any difficulty setting to qualify. I’ve tested this on easy mode dozens of times, and it works exactly the same as playing on hard, so don’t waste time cranking up the difficulty if you’re just farming unlocks.
  • Tekken Shop Purchases – The remaining base game characters (usually the 2 to 3 hidden special fighters) and all alt costume packs can be unlocked with Fight Money, the in-game currency you earn from every match you play, win or lose. You don’t have to spend real money here, either – a single online match gives you between 500 and 2,000 Fight Money, and the most expensive character in the shop only costs 100,000, which you can earn in 10 to 15 matches.

That means you can pick the method that fits your playstyle best, instead of being forced to play a mode you don’t enjoy just to get your favorite character. I usually do a mix of 2 story chapters and 1 arcade run when I’m unlocking characters on a new account, to keep things from feeling repetitive.

Hidden Character Unlock Requirements You Might Miss

A small handful of special characters don’t unlock through the three core methods, and most players don’t find them without looking up tips first. These aren’t paywalled either, they just have specific requirements you have to meet first. The most common hidden characters have requirements most players would never stumble on by accident.

For example, the fan-favorite Devil Jin only unlocks if you beat arcade mode with every single Mishima family character first: Kazuya, Jin, Jun, and Heihachi. I spent three days confused why he wasn’t showing up in my roster after I beat story mode, until a friend told me this requirement. It only takes 4 short arcade runs to unlock him, so it’s not a huge grind once you know what to do.

You can also get special event exclusive character variants by hitting certain ranks in limited-time ranked seasons. For example, hitting Gold rank in the first official ranked season unlocked a retro 90s version of Kazuya with his classic Tekken 1 outfit and move set, and that unlock is permanent even after the season ends. These variants don’t give you any competitive advantage, they’re just fun cosmetic options for long-time fans.

If you have a Tekken 7 save file on the same profile you’re using for Tekken 8, you’ll also unlock a special legacy version of Lars automatically when you first boot up the game. Cross-platform saves don’t count for this bonus, though, so if you played Tekken 7 on PlayStation and now play Tekken 8 on Xbox, you won’t qualify for the free unlock.

Fastest Ways to Grind Unlocks Without Burning Out

Even with the core methods, unlocking the full roster can feel like a chore if you’re doing it the slow way. I’ve tested a bunch of tricks to cut the grind time in half, and none of them violate Bandai Namco’s terms of service, so you won’t risk getting your account banned.

First, switch to 1-round matches in the game settings when you’re running arcade mode. The default is 3 rounds per fight, which makes each arcade run take 20 to 25 minutes. Switching to 1 round cuts that time down to 7 to 10 minutes per run, with no penalty to your unlock progress or Fight Money earnings. I used this trick when I was unlocking characters for my secondary account last month, and I got the full base roster done in 3 hours total, compared to 12 hours on my first playthrough when I didn’t know this hack.

If you have a friend who also plays Tekken 8, run co-op arcade mode together. Runs take half the time because you split the fights, and you both get full unlock progress and Fight Money rewards for the run. It’s also way more fun than grinding alone, and you can practice combos with each other between fights to get better at the game at the same time.

If you’re comfortable playing online, ranked matches give you twice as much Fight Money as casual matches, so you can earn enough to buy all the Tekken Shop characters in half the time. You don’t have to win every match either, you still get 500 Fight Money just for playing a ranked match, even if you lose. Just make sure you don’t quit mid-match, because you’ll lose all Fight Money for that match and get a temporary ranked ban if you quit too often.

Stay away from AFK grind macros or auto-play hacks, even if you see people recommending them online. Bandai Namco has been cracking down on these hard over the past few months, and they hand out permanent account bans for using them. It’s not worth losing all your progress just to cut a few hours off your grind time.

What to Do If Your Unlocked Characters Aren’t Showing Up

It’s not common, but sometimes you’ll meet all the requirements for a character, and they still won’t show up on your select screen. I’ve had this happen twice, and there are a few simple fixes that work 90% of the time, no support ticket required.

The first and most effective fix is restart your game and check for pending updates. Most of the time, unlocks don’t sync properly if you earned them while a background update was downloading, or if your game has been running for more than 10 hours straight. A quick reboot almost always makes the missing character pop up immediately. I had this happen when I unlocked Devil Jin last month, and a 30 second reboot fixed it right away.

If you’re trying to get the Tekken 7 save bonus, double check that your Tekken 7 save file is stored on the same profile and same platform you’re using for Tekken 8. Cross-platform save transfers don’t work for this bonus, and if your save file is stored on a different profile, you won’t qualify for the free Lars unlock. You also can’t use a friend’s save file to get this bonus, it has to be tied to your own account.

If you bought a DLC character and it’s not showing up, go to the in-game Tekken Shop and make sure you’ve manually downloaded the character pack. Sometimes the console store will say the DLC is installed, but you still have to trigger the download from inside the game to get it to show up on your roster. If that still doesn’t work, you can submit a support ticket to Bandai Namco, they usually resolve unlock issues within 48 hours.

At the end of the day, unlocking new fighters is supposed to be a fun part of the Tekken 8 experience, not a frustrating chore. Don’t force yourself to play story mode if you hate cutscenes, and don’t grind arcade mode if you’d rather be playing online with friends. Now that you know how to unlock new characters in Tekken 8, you can pick the path that fits your playstyle, and get back to fighting with your favorite roster as fast as possible. If you run into any weird unlock requirements I didn’t mention here, feel free to drop a note, I’ve tested almost every edge case in the game and can help you out.
